SMS QR codes

SMS QR code generator

Scanning opens the reader’s messaging app with your number in the To field and your wording already typed. They only have to press send.

Make an SMS QR code →

An SMS QR code removes the two steps where people give up: finding the number and working out what to write. The code encodes both, so the messaging app opens pre-filled and the reader just sends. That makes it well suited to anything where the reply itself is the action — a keyword entry, a repair request, a table service call, a stock enquiry. The message is a suggestion, not a commitment: the reader can edit it or delete it before sending, and nothing is sent automatically by scanning. Nothing can be, which is worth saying plainly to anyone nervous about scanning an SMS code. Keep the number in full international form, including the country code, so the code works for someone travelling or on a foreign SIM. Keep the message short too — it is a prompt, and a long one just gets deleted before sending.

Made in CuteQRCodeScanning opens the messaging app with the number and wording filled in. Nothing sends until they press send.

Why use a SMS QR code

Pre-filled and ready

The number and the wording are both encoded, so the messaging app opens with everything in place and the reader only presses send.

Nothing sends itself

Scanning opens a draft. The reader can edit or delete it before sending, and no message leaves their phone without them.

Works with the built-in camera

No app required. Any modern phone camera recognises an SMS code and offers to open the messaging app.

Good for keyword replies

If you run a keyword or short-code campaign, the code removes the step where people mistype the keyword.

How to make one

Enter your details

Choose SMS, then fill in the phone number and the message you want pre-filled. Both are ordinary form fields — you never type an SMSTO: string yourself.

Choose your style

Pick a module shape, colours or a gradient, and optionally add a centre logo. Watch the live preview to confirm the code stays scannable.

Download the PNG

Click Generate, then Save PNG to download a free 1024×1024 image ready for screen or print. No account required.

Popular use cases

Service and repair requests

A code on the machine opens a text with the asset number already written, so the report arrives identifiable.

Table service

A code on the table pre-fills the table number, which saves the kind of back and forth that slows a busy room.

Keyword campaigns

Print the code instead of the keyword. Nobody mistypes it, and the reply arrives in the format you expect.

Stock and availability enquiries

A shelf-edge code pre-fills the product reference, so a question arrives with the context already attached.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a QR code that sends a text message?

Choose SMS in the generator, enter the phone number in full international form, and type the message you want pre-filled. The code encodes both. Scanning it opens the reader’s messaging app with the number and wording already in place.

Does scanning an SMS QR code send the message automatically?

No, and it cannot. Scanning opens a draft in the messaging app with the fields filled in. The reader can change the wording, change the recipient or close it without sending. Nothing is sent until they press send themselves.

What phone number format should I use?

Full international form, starting with the country code — for example +15551234567. A local-format number works for readers on the same network but fails for anyone travelling or on a foreign SIM, which is exactly the case a printed code needs to survive.

How long can the pre-filled message be?

Technically a few hundred characters, but every character makes the code denser and harder to scan when printed small. Treat it as a prompt rather than a script: a short line that identifies what the reader is texting about reads better and prints smaller.

Do SMS QR codes work on both iPhone and Android?

Yes. Both recognise the SMSTO format from the built-in camera and offer to open the default messaging app. Very old devices and some third-party scanner apps handle it less consistently, so test the printed code on a real phone before a large run.

Is CuteQRCode free to use?

Yes, for everything most people need. The free plan gives you unlimited QR codes, every module shape and gradient preset, a centre logo, and 1024×1024 PNG downloads with no export limit and no account required. Free downloads carry a small "Made with CuteQRCode.com" line and include one active dynamic QR code with up to 500 scans a month. CuteQR Pro, at $9 a month, removes that attribution and adds vector SVG export, ten dynamic codes, scan analytics, and custom seqr.li short links.

Will a styled QR code still scan?

Yes. The three finder-pattern squares in the corners are always drawn in the standard proportions scanners rely on, and styling is applied only to the data modules. A live preview lets you confirm scannability before you download, and high error correction adds tolerance for logos.
