Do QR codes expire?

The code itself does not expire — it is a printed pattern, and patterns do not have deadlines. What expires is whatever sits behind it, and that distinction is the whole answer.

A static QR code encodes its data directly in the pattern. There is no server involved, nothing to renew and nobody who can switch it off, so a static code encoding a Wi-Fi password or a phone number will still work in twenty years. A dynamic QR code is different: it encodes a short link that has to resolve, which means a service has to be running and, usually, a subscription has to be current. If either stops, the pattern is still perfectly readable and completely useless. This is the trade-off that gets missed when people choose dynamic for the convenience without noticing they have added a dependency. The other way codes stop working has nothing to do with the code at all: the destination moves, the page is deleted, the domain lapses. Those failures hit static and dynamic alike, except that with a dynamic code you can fix it.

Made in CuteQRCodeA static Wi-Fi code. The password is in the pattern, so nothing can expire or switch it off.

What can and cannot expire

Static codes: never

The data is in the pattern. No server, no subscription, no renewal. A static code outlives the company that made it.

Dynamic codes: while the redirect lives

A dynamic code depends on a short link resolving. If the service or the plan stops, the pattern still scans and goes nowhere.

The destination

A deleted page or a lapsed domain breaks a static code permanently. With a dynamic code, you repoint it and the printed piece keeps working.

The printed surface

Fading, scratching and sun damage end more codes than anything technical. Laminate anything that lives outdoors.

How to make one that lasts

Enter your details

Enter your content and download. Static codes are the default and have no expiry; switch Dynamic on only when you need to be able to change the destination later.

Choose your style

Pick a module shape, colours or a gradient, and optionally add a centre logo. Watch the live preview to confirm the code stays scannable.

Download the PNG

Click Generate, then Save PNG to download a free 1024×1024 image ready for screen or print. No account required.

Choosing for longevity

Permanent signage

Static, pointed at a stable URL on a domain you control. Nothing to renew, nothing to forget.

Anything on a subscription

Understand that the code is only as durable as the plan behind it. Budget for it the way you budget for the domain.

Campaigns with an end date

Dynamic is ideal. When the campaign ends, repoint the code at something useful rather than leaving a dead link in the world.

Engraved or archival

Static, always. Anything meant to outlast a company should not depend on that company still answering requests.

Frequently asked questions

Do QR codes expire?

Static QR codes do not. The data lives in the printed pattern, so there is nothing to renew and no service that can switch it off. Dynamic QR codes work only while their redirect resolves, which usually means while the account behind them is active.

How long does a QR code last?

A static code lasts as long as the surface it is printed on and the destination it points at. Physically, a laminated code outdoors will typically outlast the web page it opens. The practical limit is almost never the code itself.

What happens when a dynamic QR code expires?

The pattern still scans perfectly — a phone will read the short link without trouble — but the redirect no longer resolves, so the reader gets an error page. This is why anything printed in volume deserves a note of which codes depend on which account.

Do free QR codes expire?

On CuteQRCode, static codes are free, unlimited and permanent. The free plan also includes one active dynamic code with up to 500 scans a month; exceed the scan allowance and the redirect stops serving until the month resets or you upgrade.

Can I stop a QR code from working?

Only a dynamic one. Repoint it somewhere harmless or let the redirect lapse. A static code cannot be recalled once printed, which is worth remembering before putting one on something permanent.

Is CuteQRCode free to use?

Yes, for everything most people need. The free plan gives you unlimited QR codes, every module shape and gradient preset, a centre logo, and 1024×1024 PNG downloads with no export limit and no account required. Free downloads carry a small "Made with CuteQRCode.com" line and include one active dynamic QR code with up to 500 scans a month. CuteQR Pro, at $9 a month, removes that attribution and adds vector SVG export, ten dynamic codes, scan analytics, and custom seqr.li short links.

Will a styled QR code still scan?

Yes. The three finder-pattern squares in the corners are always drawn in the standard proportions scanners rely on, and styling is applied only to the data modules. A live preview lets you confirm scannability before you download, and high error correction adds tolerance for logos.
